NSPA seeking applicants for scholarships/awards

Enter your student media now for scholastic journalism’s preeminent award — the NSPA Pacemaker. Newspaper/Newsmagazine Pacemaker and Broadcast Pacemaker deadlines are June 21, 2019. While the deadline for the Yearbook Pacemaker is Nov. 15, 2019, we encourage submission of spring-delivery yearbooks before you leave for summer.

Individual Awards

Updated in 2018, the NSPA Individual Awards feature nine competitions with a total of 43 categories. An exclusive NSPA Middle School Awards competition was also added. Now is the time to begin gathering possible submissions to reduce end-of-the-year stress. The deadline is June 21, 2019.

NSPA is also accepting entries for the Journalism Honor Roll and Wikoff Scholarship for Editorial Leadership. The deadline for both is March 8.
Journalism Honor Roll
The NSPA Journalism Honor Roll honor students who have achieved a 3.5 or higher grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and have worked in student media for two or more years. Additionally, seniors who qualify for the Honor Roll and submit additional information requested on the entry form are entered into a competition for a $1,000 scholarship.

All honor roll inductees will receive a certificate of recognition. A listing of all inductees into the Honor Roll will be published in NSPA’s Best of the High School Press.

Wikoff Scholarships for Editorial Leadership
The $1,000 Wally Wikoff Scholarship for Editorial Leadership will be given to a high school senior on the staff of an NSPA member newspaper with a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. In addition to the entry form, applicants must submit three published editorials and a recommendation from their adviser.

The award was created in 1998 in recognition of Wikoff’s service as executive director during the 1970s.
