With the new year comes a renewed sense of purpose

I have always hated the idea of making New Year’s resolutions. I figure that if there is a change needed, one should just do his or her best to make it happen — no matter the date on the calendar. However, I will admit that this year I am using January 1 as inspiration to bring a new sense of purpose and energy into my classroom.

Admittedly, this year has been more stressful than those in the past, and it is my hope that I can keep my eyes on the overall goal of the journalism department — teaching students skills they can take with them no matter what career path they may choose to follow. I aim to let go of the daily stresses quickly and instead focus on the big picture. I think I — and other advisers like me — have just about the best job in our high schools, and I want to enjoy it more with the students.

So, here’s to a successful 2017. With the 16-17 school year just about half over, I hope that all of Montana’s journalism advisers are energized and ready to tackle the work that remains to be done, whether that be with yearbook, newspaper, online publications, broadcast — or a little bit of each! Happy New Year, everyone.
