Improve scholastic journalism by getting involved

As we all approach the end of the first quarter — something I can hardly believe — I am reminded of how quickly the time passes, both professionally and personally. It is the start of Free Speech Week, and I am excited to be welcoming Larry Abramson, the dean of UM’s School of Journalism, to my classroom next Friday. I can’t think of a better way to help students find their voice and celebrate that freedom than by having Dean Abramson work with them on their interviewing, storytelling and writing skills.

After sending out more than 125 letters to teachers and districts across the state, I have been surprised by the lack of interest in even taking a short survey. I really hope to hear from more of you. I know those of us who are members of MJEA want to build a strong organization, one that serves the needs to journalism teachers across Montana.

Let’s get started with that, let’s get involved, and let’s get to know one another. Having a solid group of educators who know what I am experiencing — because not one of the other 120 teachers in my building has a clue what it is like to advise yearbook, newspaper and online — would be fantastic. As we slowly come together to create a valid, strong organization, please contact me and let me know what it is that you want MJEA to be — for you. Thanks for all you do for your students.
